Graham Bell

(March 3, 1847 – August 2, 1922)

Full Name :- Alexander Graham Bell

Graham Bell Means the inventor of Telephone.

Graham Bell was a Scottish inventor, scientists and engineer. He also co-founded the American Telephone and Telegraph Company(AT &T) in 1885. He was one of the founder of the American Institute Of Electrical Engineers in 1914.

  Bell’s Childhood Life:-

Alexander Bell was born in in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1847. Alexander’s  father was Professor Alexander Melville Bell and mother was Eliza Grace Bell.

On his 11th birthday  his  father allowed him to adopt the name “Graham” because, at age 10, he made a plea to his father to have a middle name like his two brothers namely, Melville James Bell and Edward Charles Bell.

First invention :-

At age of 12, Bell built a homemade device that combined rotating paddles with sets of nail brushes, creating a simple dehusking machine that was put into operation at the mill and used steadily for a number of years.

Educational Life -  At an early age, he was enrolled at the Royal High School, Edinburgh, Scotland. Which he left at the age of 15. He completed only the first four forms. His school record was so very bad, marked by absenteeism and lack-lustre grades. After living school, Bell travelled to London to live with his grandfather, Alexander Bell. During the year he spent with his grandfather, a love of learning was born. Because he spent so many time in serious discussion and study.

At age of 16, Bell got a position as a “PUPIL-TEACHER” of elocution and music, Western House Academy at Elgin, Moray, Scotland.

With this he enrolled as a student in Latin and Greek, he instructed classes himself in return for  board.

Graham Bell as an Inventor :-

Telephone :-

In 1871, Bell started working on the harmonic telegraph - a device that allowed multiple messages to be transmitted over a wire at the same time. While trying to perfect this technology, which was backed by a group of investors, Bell became preoccupied with finding a way to transmit human voice over wires.

By 1875, Bell, with the help of his partner Thomas Watson, had come up with a simple receiver that could turn electricity into sound.

Other scientists, including Antonio Meucci and Elisha Gray, were working on similar technologies, and there’s some debate over who should be credited with the invention of the telephone. It’s said that Bell raced to the patent office to be the first to secure the rights to the discovery.

On March 7, 1876, Bell was granted his telephone patent. A few days later, he made the first-ever telephone call to Watson, allegedly uttering the now-famous phrase, “Mr. Watson, come here. I want to see you.”

By 1877, the Bell Telephone Company, which today is known as AT&T, was created. In 1915, Bell made the first transcontinental phone call to Watson from New York to San Francisco.

Other Inventions :-

       ·     Photo-phone:-

Bell and his assistant Charles Summer Tainter invented a wireless telephone, which allowed the transmission of both sound and normal human conversations on a beam of light.

On 21 June of 1880, Bell’s  assistant transmitted a wireless voice massage on  telephone from the roof of the Franklin School (Washington D.C.) to the window of Bell’s Laboratory. (this distance between School’s roof and Bell’s window is around 700 feet.)

In one interview with reporter Bell told that “the photo-phone’s principle were the greatest achievement of his life.”

 ·    Metal Detector

 ·   Hydrofoils

· On February 23, 1999 Bell present’s a aircraft namely Silver Dart

Awards:-

·       In 1880, Bell awarded by Volta Prize.

·       In 1914 Bell was awarded by AIEF’s Medal (American Institute Of Electrical Engineers).
